The Academy Award for Best Title Writing was an Academy Award presented in the early 20th century, near the end of the Silent Era of motion pictures. Before the introduction of "talkies", dialogue was dependent on the titles that appeared between scenes. Their importance was recognized at the first Academy Awards, which included a separate category for Best Title Writing. The award went to Joseph Farnham, and no film titles were associated with his award. Three years later Farnham also became the first Oscar recipient to die. The award was given only once, in 1928, the same year that a special award was given to Warner Brothers for producing the first major sound film, The Jazz Singer. By the next award ceremonies, sound had already dominated the industry and the award for Best Title Writing was discontinued.
